What is Chia and Omega 3?
Learn About Essential Fatty Acids and Chia!

Chia (Salvia hispanica), which was originally grown hundreds of years ago by the Aztecs in central Mexico, gained widespread popularity with the 1982 release of the first Chia Pet. The terra cotta figurine when coated in moistened Chia seeds would grow a sprout like plant from the pot.

Today, Chia is grown for its nutritious seeds that are full of omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, fiber, and other vitamins and minerals. In fact, since it contains more than 60% omega-3 fatty acids, it yields the highest and purest omega-3 of all of the vegetable sources. Typically, Chia seeds contain 34% oil, 25% dietary fiber, 20% protein, plus a significant amount of antioxidants. The actual plant grows to be only about 6 cm long and 4 cm wide. The seeds that the plant produces are usually either black or white. While the seeds may have a different appearance, the nutritional content is equal in both varieties.

Omega-3 fatty acids are nutritionally essential to our bodies since we cannot produce them naturally, and must therefore depend on receiving them through our dietary foods. These polyunsaturated fats are composed of ALA (linolenic acid) EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). In 2004, the FDA gave a "Qualified Health Claim" status to EPA and DHA fatty acids. This was due to the supportive scientific research that shows they may help reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Currently there are many scientific research studies being conducted to prove many of the positive effects of regular omega-3 supplementation.
